ADVICE REGARDING POSTING AUCTIONS AND ADVERTISING YOUR COMMISSION WORK:

*KNOWING WHEN YOU ARE READY TO TAKE COMMISSIONS
Many of those who do commission based work have been doing their work for some time. Consider how much trial and error goes into learning how to create a pattern from scratch.

Making one complete costume does not necessarily mean you need to start a business. Try producing one to put up for auction first to get a feel of what sells, what doesn’t sell, and what those in the costume market are looking to pay for your work. Don’t judge what someone else charges verses yours, but at the same time, don’t sell yourself short.

* PHOTOGRAPHING YOUR WORK
Photos depicting items for sale on the ground outside or in a messy room will reflect badly on you. For fabric, folding it for display on a couch, hanger, or simply having someone hold it up is acceptable. Placing an item on a chair covered in a blanket or back drop will appear nice. Using a stool and shooting outside with nature light will also work.

When taking photos of a partial suit, consider what clothing someone may need to wear when modeling it. If the costume has no arms and only paws, use a long sleeve shirt or jersey. If it has arms, you will want to use a short sleeve shirt to show them.

* HAVE PICTURES ON YOUR AUCTION
Unless examples of your work can be seen, how will they have an idea of what they're receiving? This can not be stressed this enough. Are there others they can consult about your work? How will someone decide to spend their money on commissioning their project on your work?

* SHOW OFF YOUR VIDEOS
Post videos in a link or embedded code. Auction sites such as Furbid, Ebay, Furbuy, and other auction sites generally won't allow you to post embedded code, but a link to the video is acceptable. It won't draw in as much attention, but it still an example of your work.

* CHOOSE YOUR CORRECT PRICE
If you list an auction (for example) $30, and it doesn't sell, don't relist it (for example) $70. More than likely it will still not sell.

* MENTION AREAS YOU SPECIALIZE IN
If you produce work in one specific area, such as ears and tails, mention what you do. If you make full fursuits and are welcome to producing parts and partials as well, mention this. This will give folks a feel for what they can ask for.

* CONSIDER SAFE MATERIALS
In a costume head, foam, fiberglass, and plastic mesh are pretty common fursuit materials. I emphasize the use of foam, due to it being soft and the safest to use.

Materials that are not safe are plaster (damages easily), paper mache (crushes easily), and flammable materials (fumes), and fun foam (scratches easily, generally looks bad for anything other than structure). Paper mache can be used in lighter mask or decorative materials. I've seen a few heads, but for those who perform as mascots, they will more than likely get damaged.

* CONSIDER MATERIAL AND ANIMAL ALLERGIES
If any parts of your work, particularly latex based, be sure to mention this in your work. If someone is commissioning work from you and it will include latex, make sure they will not be allergic. Any auctioned work that incorporates latex should be mentioned in the post.

Pets such as cats and dogs may lay or shed on material without being noticed. Be sure to mention if you keep animals in case there are any allergy issues. This goes for incorporating real fur (rabbit, deer, ect) in your work.

If you do not have animals at home, mentioning “animal-free” or “pet-free” is helpful.
